Remote Working Is Not New, It Is New For You

Morning,

Remote working is a very popular topic in the ‘large dinosaur online world’, including on LinkedIn. The inconvenient truth about ‘remote working’ is that historically, remote working is not new at all. Remote working might be new for you and people in your online comfort zone, but companies have been implementing remote working and other forms of what my late professor Jay Galbraith in organizational design and organizational learning called the future of the organization: the virtual organization in 1996, including virtual teams and allowing people to work from home online for decades.

A short history of remote working.

Since the beginning of the Nineties of the last century, global companies including multinationals and global financial institutions like global banks have introduced different forms of remote working for different reasons.

Examples from my own experience in global banking at ABN Amro were global virtual teams and working at home in investment banking including in my own department, in offshore banking, during mergers & acquisitions and during split-ups of smaller or larger parts of the company (see my Linkdin-profile).

While many benefits come with different types of remote working and other types of a virtual organization with AI-powered organizational design like virtual teams of even virtual tribes, such as increased speed, flexibility, productivity and creativity, access to a wider global, regional and local talent pool, and reduced organizational costs, there are also challenges to overcome in the case of a large traditional organization.
